Thursday Oct 01, 2020
Thursday Oct 01, 2020
The calendar shows October which means the countdown to ski season is in full swing! With mid-November opening days expected and an Indy Pass already purchased, I will share my approach to getting to partner mountains for what is expected to be the most challenging season ever. Time to up the stoke! Make sure to catch the fall foliage, learn about a new ski area perfectly positioned for the pandemic, listen for two “busta rhymes” and my six-month-old son Jay trying to get in on the conversation. Trivia, listener questions, seasonal beers from Great Falls Brewery and an overview of the northeast Indy Pass ski areas fill the chatter.

It's mid-September and the change in the seasons from summer to fall just means winter is that much closer! This episode’s theme – an Outdoor State of Mind – will feature the airing of grievances, creative ways to embrace the outdoors into the cold months, a resurrected ski area in Maine, and a feature segment about the greatest challenge of our lifetime, protecting our winters. Season pass sales, winter operation updates and good ski news will all be part of this episode – recorded outside on my deck! The chirping birds, barking dogs and garbage truck are nice accent pieces to the episode theme. And for the love of God, “Is the Pano Open?”

To kick-off Season 2 of the Powder Hounds Podcast as well as start the countdown to Opening Day, I take a big bite out of the pie that is Vail Resorts recently released 2020-2021 operating plan. There are also plenty of other topics to cover, from drones being the future personal ski lift, to the potential encouragement of tailgating in ski area parking lots, to blasting live tracks while running outside and how to appropriately celebrate a personal best on the links. Also, the beloved games return with the segment – “C 10” Question Trivia (Happy belated National Chicken Wing Day Beamer!). Find the trivia question answers @PowderHoundSkis and post your score. Prizes for listeners are in the works, friends.

This third “solo summer” episode features the latest ski news, mountain operation plans for the upcoming 2020-2021 winter season and three ski & ride “challenges.” No doubt skiing and riding will be memorable this season, so join me in sprinkling-in some purposeful green circle, blue square and black diamond fun challenges! Also catch some senseless banter and references to Super Scrabble, Phish, Star Wars, Dark ‘n’ Stormy (by Goslings of course), and an opportunity to rent a ski area for the day! Even better, tailgating may be encouraged at the mountain this winter. A memorable season ahead, for sure!

This “Throwback Haystack” Mountain, Vermont episode features a 15-year-old ski trip tale involving a broken birch tree, rooftop snow angels and a Mercury Topaz that just couldn’t make it up a snow-covered mountain road. Host Jeff "Squawman" - better known as "Shawman" - Shaw interviews skiers "Franchise" and "KP" and witty snowboarder "Beamer," in a nickname-filled episode that barrels down memory lane. Sure, the ski area may now be The Hermitage Club,” but it will ALWAYS be Haystack to us. Enjoy the shenanigans!
